While we all place a great deal of emphasis on our own likability, as well as the likability of others, businesses must also remain likeable. If a business does not maintain a solid reputation and stay likeable, their ability to gain new customers (and retain the ones that they have) can take a serious hit. Read on to learn more about the 5 things you do to make yourself less likeable in the business world.

  1. False Self Deprecation

No one likes a person who brags and no one likes a person who tries to brag under the false pretence of humility. Adding a dose of “self deprecation” to your brag does not make it any less of a brag, whether you are speaking yourself or for your business. People are much smarter than you think and while they may not call you out for your humble bragging directly, they are bound to notice it and your overall level of likability will decrease as a result.

  1. Name Dropping

In my experience, it has always been best to show and prove, as opposed to bragging about who you know. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no one cares who you know or how often you hang out with them. A person who speaks in this manner tends to come across as being very insecure, the type of person who derives their self worth from what others think of them. Don’t be that person.

  1. Being Close Minded

If you want to succeed in the business world, you’ll need to think outside of the box. Being close minded is a great way to ensure that you will never progress or reach your true potential and I often find myself feeling sorry for those who are. Having the ability to see the world through the eyes of others is an invaluable skill, no matter what your profession may be.

  1. Oversharing

You might think that it is a good idea to put everything on the table for people during the early stages of your interaction with them. In reality, this is one of the worst approaches you could take when it comes to your likability. Sharing a great deal of personal information right off the bat comes across as needy and less than likeable. It makes you seem desperate for a connection.

  1. Inattentive Behaviour

One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to how people interact with one another in modern society is the idea that it is perfectly acceptable to whip your phone out and look down at it like a zombie when someone is talking to you. Nothing makes you look like more of a self absorbed than checking your phone mid conversation.
