Are Sleepy Employees Hurting Your Business?

The obvious answer is that, if you do have sleepy employees in your company then yes, this does hurt your business. After all, no one wants to hire a Homer Simpson who falls asleep when there is a nuclear meltdown. However, how much does it hurt your business and in what ways? The answers reveal that sleepy employees have a two-fold negative impact: on themselves and on the business.

Sleepy employees harm themselves

About one out of seven employees have missed personal functions (such as family get-togethers or watching a favorite television program) due to sleeplessness and almost one out of three employees sleep fewer than six hours each night. There seems to be a loss of disparity, disagreement and discussion regarding the ideal number of hours of sleep. However, the generally accepted range is from six to eight hours of sleep each day. Thus, fewer than six hours of sleep is below the accepted parameter.

In any case, lack of adequate sleep results in less energy, less productivity, reduction in thinking skills, and a decreased ability to adapt or respond to stress. The business environment is stressful enough even when a person does get adequate sleep. A lack of sleep makes a bad thing even worse.

In addition, employees who do not get the required sleep are 30% more likely to be overweight (and increasing the risks of diabetes), and to suffer from hypertension, depression and even cancer.

Sleepy employees harm the business

Factors that can more directly harm the business environment are that sleepy employees have a 23% reduction in concentration; 18% reduction in memory; 11% greater difficulty in handling financial affairs; and 9% greater difficulty in performing the company of volunteer work.

Some employees do make some amends to this lack of sleep. 40% of employees do admit to catching up on their sleep by dozing off during the day and least one time each month. Although this can be personally beneficial, it detracts from productive time at the business.

Overall, this loss of productivity is estimated to cost the company $2,000 each year for each sleepy employee.

The solution

The company ought to offer programs, institute policies and/or merely educate employees on the importance and procedure of proper sleep habits. The employees will win because they will avert the negative impact of their lack of sleep and the company will win because the employees are more productive and engaged in the company.
