Everyone Needs A Mentor, Even You!

When you were younger, there were always people you looked up to, people you could depend on to provide consistently good advice, guidance and general counsel. Sometimes, these people would be your parents, or your teachers, or even an older sibling or relative.

Many of us have fond memories of a favourite uncle, or the grandparent who always seemed to dole out wisdom for exactly the situation we were experiencing, and always seemed to know just when to give that information, and how much of it was needed. Sometimes, we even wish we could return to the days of our youth, and have that person around again, to advise against youthful indiscretions, or to help us choose the best job, or business partner, or investments. That’s where having a mentor comes into play.

The idea of a mentor has existed since humans learned to communicate with one another, and since craftsmen begin sharing their knowledge of a given trade with younger people, so that the practices and procedures of talents like masonry, or metalworking or carpentry could be passed down to a new generation. Many times, these master craftsmen (and women) would only pass on their knowledge to children or close relatives, thus keeping the know how of a craft somewhat secret and insuring that not too many people would gain an understanding of how to cut stone, or make brass, or build homes.

These early purveyors of knowledge were often mentors to their students in areas outside of their chosen crafts, advising them on who to marry, who to do business with, their spiritual lives and any number of other topics that young people would need to know to function in the adult world. Somewhere along the way, the tradition of young people always having a mentor to teach them was lost, however and its something that isn’t encouraged as much as it once was.

A mentor can help with many decisions, whether in a business setting, or something far more personal like life counseling and advice. Choosing a mentor can be a daunting task, but we all need someone who can view our circumstances from an outside view, and give advice based on that viewpoint. Very often, we “can’t see the forest for the trees” and need someone who is wiser or more experienced to guide us along the right path.

When you’re seeking out your mentor, as I encourage you to do, they don’t always have to be older than you. Many older people who are seeking a career or a life change are finding mentors in most unusual circumstances, in people who may be younger than them chronologically, but more experienced in the areas of life, or the businesses they are seeking to transition to.

Remember, your mentor can’t answer questions you don’t ask, so once you find someone you can trust, who will agree to act as a mentor, you have to ask the questions, in order to get the right guidance and answers.
