Things Ultra-Productive People do Differently

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. All of us read and/or remembered this book by Stephen Covey published about 25 years ago. The book was true then and it is true now, and this article could regurgitate what it taught us. However, that would be outside the parameters of this article, and it would neglect what we have learnt since then about business and ultra-productive business people

Ultra-productive people prepare, and then prepare, and prepare again. In other words, they over-prepare. Doing and accomplishing things does not mean merely doing and accomplishing things; it means doing and accomplishing the right things. Moreover, especially in business, it means preparing for what the accomplishments can entail. There can always be unintended consequences, and Murphy’s Law has a way of rearing its ugly head from time to time, even for those who over-prepare. However, the preparation will mitigate any adverse effects, leaving the ultra-productive person better off than his or her competition.

Perhaps as a corollary to the foregoing, ultra-productive business people stay focused. They stay focused on their goals, and understand that each goal has its own steps or mini-goals. For example, if a construction company were building a skyscraper then it may have mini-goals of building one storey at a time. Perhaps the most common expression of this focus on goals is that productive people spend the first few minutes of each day thinking about what needs to be accomplished for that day. They then categorize the goals into A, B, C, D and E (with A being the most significant, important and urgent, and E being the least significant). They then sub-categorize the goals by numbers. Then they go about accomplishing the A1 goal, A2 goal, A3 goal, etc. before beginning the B goals. If they do not complete the E goals for that day then it may not be really that important, or they could leave it for the next day, or they could delegate these goals. They repeat this process each and every day.

Ultra-productive people repeat this process because they comprehend the importance of making and keeping commitments. Keeping a promise to another is keeping a promise to oneself, and vice versa. You ought to ask yourself whether or not your actions are consistent with your goal. For example, if you had to attend a very important seminar, but then spent many hours showering, reading the newspaper, eating lunch and doing other things that had no impact on your stated goal of attending the seminar, then you will not be truly ultra-productive.
